The largest market in France opened this week in Strasbourg, just in time to snare the throngs of holiday shoppers hitting the streets each weekend.
Last year 1.6 million people made their way to the Strasbourg Christmas market, making it one of the largest and most popular markets around. Strasbourg makes a great pre-Christmas mini-break for a number of other reasons above and beyond the great Christmas shopping opportunity its market presents, however.
The city itself seems almost built for the winter and every street exudes a warm cosiness that invites the traveller in out of the snow. Strasbourg's hospitality is legendary with a number of bierstubs and winstubs offering not just great beer and ale but also highly palatable cuisine especially suited to the weather. There's nothing like a three-meat baeckeoffe stew and a pint by the fire on a snowy day.
Strasbourg's cathedral is a stunning piece of architectural brilliance and should not be missed even for all the bustle and allure of the market. Another favourite tourist attraction is the bateau-mouche, the boat that will take you over the locks and under the bridges of Strasbourg.
Under the shadow of the giant Christmas tree on Place Klber and along every street in town is the fabulous architecture of the city's past including strong French and German influences. Travellers should take time out from shopping and sight-seeing to skate on the rink at the Place du Chteau and to take in the beautiful music at any one of 60 concerts planned across town for the holiday season.
