One of the winter’s worst storms is sweeping across Britain and has already caused a number of flights to be cancelled at airports across the UK. Heathrow, Gatwick, Bristol and Southampton have all cancelled flights as the weather conditions worsened.
At Heathrow alone, more than 40 flights were cancelled on Monday including departures for Dusseldorf, Barcelona, Madrid and Paris. At Gatwick flights to Pisa, Amsterdam, Greece and Houston were cancelled.
According to an advisory issued by Heathrow Airport: “Passengers should check the situation of their flight with their airline before setting out for the airport”.
Bristol Airport was forced to suspend its ground operations during the early hours of Monday morning because of strong winds. Although the flights were able to take off eventually, they were delayed while waiting for bags to be loaded.
The Bristol airport’s website said: “Passengers are now boarding these flights, but delays are expected throughout the morning as a result, with further severe weather forecast.”
Those wishing to leave the country by car were also unable to do so on Monday as the storm closed down the Port of Dover and all ferry crossings were suspended.
Travellers to Britain who are caught in the storm will be glad that they took out comprehensive travel insurance before their trip.
