Britons waste money on vacation

According to new research, Britons are likely to waste money at the end of their vacations.

Insurance provider Abbey found that Britons are likely to spend their money on frivolous purchases in the airport before departing for home. Holiday-makers from the UK often spend what's left of their foreign currency on items such as perfume, souvenirs, magazines and books they might not otherwise buy and these purchases add up.

Research conducted by Abbey found that 36 per cent of the population squanders an average of £65 in this manner every year. The total cost of these impulsive airport purchases is over £1 billion.

Abbey's head of banking, Steve Shore, commented on the findings: "It's amazing how much people are prepared to waste. Even with a commission fee, converting the money back into sterling is far more cost effective than splurging it on things you don't need."

The most likely group to waste their foreign currency are those between 25 and 34 years old. In contrast, those over the age of 65 were least likely to spend their money at the airport.

All travellers should remember that a few pounds spent on travel insurance before take-off is always a good investment.
