Tour operator Travelscope Holidays has gone into administration, leaving thousands of families stuck at home with their Christmas plans ruined.
Almost 10,000 people were scheduled to travel with Travelscope Holidays over the holidays, but the company has collapsed in the face of what they call "cashflow" issues. Administrators have assured all those affected that they will receive a full refund for the cancelled trips.
Ernest Roberts found out only two days in advance that his Christmas holiday was ruined.
"My wife, myself and two friends were going on the 23rd to Germany for a Christmas break and that's all gone now," Roberts said. "It is a very disappointing Christmas."
30,000 more people who had reserved trips in the upcoming months will also lose their reservations and be forced to plan everything anew.
Travelscope Managing Director Richard Ford said that certain legal action combined with a £6 million investment for a new building led to the company's cash problems.
Ford said he made sure all staff received their monthly wages before putting the firm into administration, even going so far as to re-mortgage his own assets to finance the business for 10 days longer.
"I am desperately sorry for the staff, many of whom have been with the company for a long time," he said.
Ford also expressed his sympathy for the travellers whose plans were cancelled. "I also feel sorry for the customers who thought they would be going away this Christmas or New Year and who now will not be," he said.
According to the Travelscope website, all refunds to air passengers will be paid by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), while the land and sea travellers will receive money from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
