Don't leave home without your travel insurance details

While research is showing that many people take vacations abroad without any protection at all, others are leaving the country without being sure that their policies provide adequate coverage.

The head of travel at the Post Office, John Howells, suggests that travellers verify the details of their travel insurance policies to determine if they are being provided with enough coverage. Sometimes premiums on insurance are insufficient to cover something as commonplace as losing your luggage.

Less commonplace activities, like participating in certain sports may not be covered by some Travel insurance policies so travellers who have planned things like scuba diving or jet skiing and who want to be insured in case of an accident, should read their policy's fine print.

Mr. Howells said: "Taking out any old travel insurance policy does not necessarily mean you will be covered for any eventuality."

The only way to ensure that you are adequately covered is by paying attention to the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy.

A recent study indicated that many Britons fail to bring their insurance information with them when travelling. Its always a good idea to keep copies of emergency contact numbers, 24-hour assistance lines and your policy numbers in a couple of locations so that you can get help even when your bags are lost or your wallet is stolen.

Before travelling, you should also ensure that your passport is valid for at least another six months and that you have obtained all the visas necessary for your travels.
