Calls for Heathrow's third runway grow stronger

The dispute over Heathrow Airport's planned construction of a third runway continues as major UK trade unions and businesses made a call for faster development.

The government approved the plan for the third runway and said it abided by noise reduction and air quality requirements. The runway is intended to expand Heathrow's network of air routes.

British Airways has joined the group 'Future Heathrow' to call for stronger action and more progress toward the runway's construction.

Paul Starrs, commercial manager for British Airways in the Middle East, said British Airway's imminent move to Heathrow's new Terminal 5 will be a step toward lessening problems.

"This will go a long way to easing recent problems at the airport, offering our regional passengers landing at, or transiting through, Heathrow a far more comfortable terminal experience, with less queuing, faster baggage systems and better punctuality," Starrs said. "However, a third runway is imperative to ensuring London remains an international hub."
