Although they may have the most alluring advertising schemes, research conducted by MoneyExpert.com suggests that women turn away from gender-specific car insurance.
An annual insurance policy from one of the four most popular female car insurers ended up costing £72 more than a standard policy from a general insurer.
"With a number of high profile advertising campaigns, women-only car insurers have begun to capture a significant share of the car insurance market, but by going straight to these providers female consumers are ruling out many of the biggest names in the insurance market and some of the best value policies on offer," said Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com.
Four companies catering to women, Sheila's Wheels, Diva Car, Girl Motor and Diamond gave an average price of £279 for a standard annual policy on a 2002 Citroen C5. In contrast, the average price quoted from four general insurers was just £207.
Shopping around before buying car insurance is always recommended.
