Single-trip or annual coverage?
With the wide variety of travel insurance options available on the market, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your vacation. Because there are many different ways to take a vacation, from a weekend mini-break abroad to a ski adventure on the Continent, there are many different insurance policies available to suit your needs. Frequent travellers, however, may want to consider the convenience of an annual travel policy.
While an annual policy will almost certainly prove more expensive than single trip insurance for people who travel only once or twice a year, it can be extremely expedient for those expecting to take multiple trips. For anyone planning to go abroad more than once, it is really worth comparing costs on a single trip and annual policy.
Another benefit of an annual policy is that policies often cover a wider range of activities automatically. Although it always pays to check, most annual insurance covers winter skiing, for example. Many policies will only cover winter sports for a limited number of days, however, so if you really love skiing, you may want to read the fine print of your policy.
For people who love to be able to fly at a moments notice, annual insurance allows you jump on a plane and remain covered without worrying about arranging insurance and shopping around. It can also help those who are just plain forgetful and likely to drive to the airport without even considering calling an insurance broker.
For those that choose annual insurance there are a few things to be aware of. The first is the number of days out of the country, which will be covered. Some companies cover trips which last 21 days, some cover trips of a maximum of 45 days. Longer trips may need single trip cover.
Secondly, it pays to pay attention to the start date for the insurance. Many people pick the first day of their travel, however, this will not always cover you if you need to cancel the trip prior to that date since the cancellation insurance won't kick in until the rest of the policy does.
Whether you chose a single or an annual policy, it's always a good idea to travel with coverage and know what you are covered for. That way you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
