Ministers are working to extend the Air Discount Scheme, a plan that provides cheaper airfares for those living in the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
Since the program was introduced in 2006, residents of these remote areas have received a 40 per cent discount on many flights to urban areas of Scotland. The program is due to expire in March, but the government seeks to extend it for another three years.
Over 200,000 air tickets have been bought through the program, demonstrating its popularity. With approval from the European Commission, the scheme would not expire until March 2011.
The airline Loganair has announced the addition of 50,000 permanent budget fare seats on its main routes between the islands and the mainland.
Peter Tierney, chief executive of Loganair, said: "This is a very welcome announcement from the Scottish Government and gives us the confidence to launch the most competitively priced and widespread flight schedule ever offered in Loganair's history."
