More travellers flying from Scotland

July was the busiest month ever experienced by airports in the UK with 15.1 million passengers flying in and out of airports managed by airport operator BAA. Compared to the same period last year, passenger numbers increased by 0.2 per cent this July.

Airports in Scotland saw the largest increases in passenger traffic, despite attempted terrorist activity at Glasgow Airport earlier in the year. The three major Scottish airports, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen handled 2,212,672 passengers in July, up one per cent from July last year.

One of the airports with the more drastic growth was Aberdeen Airport where passenger numbers increased by 10 per cent this July over numbers from the same month last year. A total of 325,000 people used the airport over the month this year.

Although BAA saw a general increase in passenger traffic, the number of people flying from Heathrow has dropped. There were 1.7 per cent less passengers in July this year than last year. Long lines to get through security and the high incidence of lost luggage may be contributing factors to the airport's loss of popularity among flyers this year.
