Holiday travellers should consider insurance

Insurance company Direct Line forecasts a busy holiday season at the airports, with a YouGov poll of 2,066 adults revealing that around five percent of the population will be spending Christmas abroad.

Based on last year's figures, Direct Line predicts that December 29 will have the most airport traffic. According to the poll, 75% of holidaymakers will be away for at least a week. An increase in the number of people flying means a higher risk of lost luggage, so the insurer advises travellers to invest in a travel insurance plan.

At least 29,000 holiday flyers may end up with lost baggage, according to the insurer. The head of Direct Line, Chris Price, said that restrictions on hand luggage force most travellers to check their baggage. "With so many suitcases going missing each year, travellers should take extra precautions to protect their belongings and avoid any potential disappointment by ensuring that they have adequate single trip travel insurance if the worst happens," Price said.
