Blair to ask Bush for 'open skies' reprieve report

The European Union has outlined a deal which would ease the number of restrictions on travel across the Atlantic and open up Heathrow airport to an increased number of flights. But it seems that Tony Blair wants more concessions from the US before hes willing to sign the UK onto the agreement. The Sunday Times reported on March 18th that Blair would be speaking to President Bush this week about extending the negotiations.

Blair wants to see more liberalisations in the American aviation industry including less restrictions on domestic flights and airline ownership. In return, the UK would allow increased access of American airlines into Heathrow. It is speculated that Blair will propose a delay of five months on the deal and insist on the right to terminate the agreement if America can't show results on their end.

European actors are waiting to see how the negotiations between the UK and US fall out. Virgin Airlines, who was initially opposed to the Open Skies deal, has stated that it is ready to take advantage of the terms of the agreement to increase flights from European cities to the US.
