Passengers enjoy self-service options

A new survey indicates that today's travellers are increasingly taking advantage of technological advances and making use of services like online check-in.

Along with other self-service options, the survey shows that travellers are enjoying the use of web check-in as a way to take control over their own travels.

The research was conducted by Sita, an IT and communications company. Researchers used information from 100 airlines and over a billion passengers to come to their conclusions.

Over half the carriers surveyed currently offer online check-in and it is estimated that a total of 89 per cent will be doing so within the next two years.

At least 20 per cent of passengers used web check-in services and a total of 49 per cent are expected to do so next year.

Paul Coby, chairman of Sita, said: "Airlines are increasingly using web check-in because they want to make travel easier for their passengers.

"What could be simpler than going online and checking yourself in? Furthermore, it's relatively easy to deploy and saves cost, so it's a win-win for both passengers and airlines."

All low-cost carriers surveyed by Sita as well as the top 25 passenger-carrying airlines already use web check-in so chances are it will be available for your next flight.
