Lone travellers these days are somewhat of a rare breed. It takes a certain quality of person to brave the loneliness and the endless hours of silence with only yourself for company but sometimes even that beats the packaged singles tours which used to be the only thing available for a someone without a travelling companion.
Now, in an attempt to pick up a dwindling market share, travel companies are expanding their business to include new options for solo travellers. According to data from the Travel Industry Association, one in ten people who travel for fun do so alone, so the demand for more tailored adventures for singles is certainly there.
Some tour operators like Intrepid Travel are getting into the adventure travel market for singles and offer people the chance to share a room with another single traveller to cut costs. On the other end of the scale, companies like Absolute Travel are pairing up lone travellers to hit luxury destinations.
It's not only the tour operators getting into the singles game either. A growing number of resorts and spas are beginning to cater to those who go solo. Several resorts have rates especially for single travellers and staff who are in all likelihood trained not to ask that awkward question: "Just you, tonight?"
Sue Blough, a retired woman, always travels with Adventure Women, a company which has long catered to single, female travellers. "When I retired, I hadn't travelled much," she said. She says her singles groups are comfortable, allow her to get out into the mountains and hike and don't surround her with couples.
"Since I've been doing this, I'm seeing more and more solo travellers, especially women," she said. "A lot of them are married, with husbands that have travelled all their lives for business and absolutely hate travelling."
Whether you want to go it alone, find a like minded travel partner or join a group, tour operators offer a lot more options today than the sun and sand packages that were available to singles a few years back. So if you're alone and want to hit the road, there should be nothing stopping you.
