The first days of September usually signal the end to summer. Children go back to school and vacationers desert the beaches of resort towns and head back to their offices. But late October and mid-November can be the perfect time to be heading back to the beach. In the south of Spain, locals living along the beaches of Mallorca call this time of year the little summer considering it one of the most enjoyable times of year. Temperatures are not overly hot and prices are falling and the beaches are not crowded.
The most popular airport in Mallorca is in the capital, Palma. The airport receives a large number of scheduled and chartered flights from the UK, but the low cost carrier, easyJet, offers the most choice and some of the cheapest flights, particularly at this time of year.
From the Gothic La Seu cathedral which towers over the old walls of the city and dominates the sky line to the Bellver castle which dates back to the 16th-century, Palma is full of interesting historic sites to explore. At night, however, it is the city's restaurants and nightlife that draws people in and many often skip the city and head directly for the sands while the sun is warm.
Resorts on either side of the city have beach access, but Palma has five beaches in its own right, all renowned for their brilliant white sand.
Whether spending the day shopping, wandering through the streets admiring art and architecture or parked at a cafe table enjoying the food and flavours of the city, Palma offers something for every traveller. Active vacation makers will enjoy the hikes through the tangled alleyways of the old city, and the cycle paths along the beach to small fishing villages. Those more in search of relaxation might find themselves window shopping, sipping aperitifs, dining on seafood or lying in the sun.
