Due to the violence that erupted in Kenya after national election disputes in Nairobi, Mombasa and the Rift Valley, the British Foreign Office has issued warnings against travelling to certain areas, such as downtown Nairobi. The U.S. State Department issued a warning against all but essential travel to Kenya.

In other news, around 1,700 Qantas airlines engineers have threatened to go on strike on January 9th. Since all Qantas aircraft are required to receive clearance for flight from a licenced engineer, such a strike could cause extreme disruption of flight service, with the possibility of grounding Qantas' entire fleet. If this strike goes through, it will be the biggest disruption the airline has seen since a strike in 1989.

In the UK, Virgin Atlantic cabin crew maintains plans for two 48-hour strikes scheduled to being on January 9th and January 16th. Virgin Atlantic has said that with the help of "volunteer" employees, flight service should be running on a nearly normal schedule.

Travellers to Costa Rica will be pleased to hear that crime has decreased in tourist areas of the country. The introduction of a new tourist police force has helped crime rates go down over the past year, including a 36% drop in San Jose province, 34% and 33% decrease in Guanacaste and Limon, respectively, and a 22% drop in Alajuela.
