Advice for the tornado-affected

Following several tornadoes which hit the UK recently, the Association of British Insurers has issued some advice to those who have been hit by tornado damage.

ABI representatives say that most homes and businesses holding building insurance will be covered. In addition, cars damaged by tornados with comprehensive motor insurance will be protected.

In order to make a claim, ABI suggests home, business and car owners first contact their insurance provider for information. They warn that relevant receipts will likely be necessary in order to assist with the processing of claims.

ABIs director of general insurance, Nick Starling explained: "While tornadoes in the UK are thankfully very rare, unexpected extreme weather incidents like this are exactly what insurance is here for. Insurers will be doing everything possible to help policyholders who have suffered damage and will be dealing with all claims as quickly as they can."

While good home, business and auto insurance can help protect against tornado damage at home, travellers venturing into hurricane zones like the Caribbean should also be sure to get travel insurance which covers them in case of a similar natural disaster abroad.
