High and low points of this year in travel

Writers at The Sunday Times described their best and worst travel experiences of the past year, with destinations ranging from Tokyo to Tenerife, Belgrade to Beijing.

Writer Stephen Bleach cited a motor cruiser boating tour of Venice as the high point of his travels in 2007. He said the canals make for a hectic ride, but no experience is needed.

"Driving a motor cruiser around the busy lagoon, we almost rammed a police boat and just missed a floating hearse, but we saw La Serenissima as she was meant to be seen, from the water," Bleach said. Connoisseur offers weekly rates starting at £845.

Dom Joly said his worst trip of the year was to Tenerife, in the Grand Canary Islands. An unattractive setting combined with exceedingly drunk tourists soured this writer's experience.

The fishing village of Beer in southeast Devon was Nick Redman's highlight of the year. He writes of a picturesque village offering the ultimate summer relaxation, noting "bees murmuring around the beer glasses in the garden of the Anchor Inn; ice cream in deckchairs on the pebbles; and the kids kayaking to catch fish for barbecues with wine later, below the cliffs and the stars."

Many writers actually chose budget airlines or specific airlines as their worst travel experience of the year, citing delays, lost luggage, bad food and poor customer service.

Writer Stanley Stewart said of budget airlines: "They seem convinced that you forfeit your rights the moment you press the confirm button for your credit-card details."
