2008 a year for stable growth in tourism

A new study is predicting a modest growth in the UK travel market for 2008, which is good news for companies like TUI AG and Thomas Cook.

The study was conducted by GfK, a market research provider from Germany. The final report predicted that both TUI AG and Thomas Cook would see growth next year as Britons are expected to spend three per cent more on vacations next year than they did in 2007.

The study was released in Berlin on Friday and predicted that the British travel market would continue to grow at a comparable rate to the growth seen in the industry this year.

Although the study is reasonably certain that Europe's second largest travel market will be growing next year, it remains to be seen how travel companies will capitalise and benefit from that growth.

Chief of the ITB Berlin tourism fair, Martin Buck, commented: "All in all Britain's travel market still looks very stable.

The study also pointed out that the industry would undoubtedly be affected by changes in the American economy. The sub prime crisis in America has already affected consumer spending which may, in turn, affect tourism in the UK.
