First time buyers should find the right travel insurance

The best advice for those buying travel insurance is to take the time to read the policy and know what it covers.

Travel insurance policies vary widely and cover, or fail to cover, many different situations. Knowing when you are covered and when you are not can help you relax and enjoy a safe vacation with as few concerns as possible.

Whether you are driving your own car abroad, picking up a rental car, getting on board a cruise liner, stepping onto a train or boarding a flight, a trip can always be called off.

Traveler Renee Morgan said she and her husband took out travel insurance for both their holidays last year. Before the first holiday, her husband had to have surgery and couldn't make the flight. The couple received their trip money back.

Whether you book online, or in person with an insurance broker or travel agent, there are still many options to consider when purchasing insurance. Some policies offer protection against the loss of non-refundable travel costs like discounted airfares, hotel reservations and tour costs. Other policies focus more heavily on medical emergencies, illnesses and even death. The third area that most policies cover is the loss, damage or theft of personal property.

If it's your first time buying insurance, spend some time talking to different companies and shop around. There's sure to be a policy that's just right for your age, your trip and the activities you have planned.
