When flights are delayed, look to travel insurance

Delayed travellers who look angrily to an airline for compensation will probably find themselves disappointed. Since airlines are under no obligation to get travellers to their destinations at any specific time, only comprehensive Travel insurance can compensate travellers whose flights have been delayed.

Halifax Travel Insurance representatives explained that airlines are only obliged to transport travellers to a specific destination but have no responsibility to get there on time. With climate-change protesters flooding Heathrow and long security lines and scares at airports everywhere, delayed flights are becoming an ever increasing reality for air travellers.

Halifax Travels senior manager of pricing and underwriting, Paul Birkhead, said: "When travelling by air you need to plan for every eventuality, including delays."

Whether the delays are caused by protesters, plane malfunctions or security issues, travel insurance is necessary for travellers who want to make a claim. "To cover these eventualities, we urge that people do not travel without insurance," Birkhead added.

According to research conducted by the Air Transport Users Council, travellers made more complaints about flight cancellations than any other issue between March 2006 and March 2007.
