Budget airline RyanAir may soon have some competition in the skies between America and Europe. New budget airline, Virgin America, recently announced plans for no-frills flights across the Atlantic.
RyanAir announced plans to offer flights between the UK and several cities in the US for as low as £7 one way, plus tax. Virgin America made their announcement a few days later.
Virgin America is partly owned by Sir Richard Branson and is a US-based company. The airline received permission from authorities in Washington for the new flights last month and will operate a fleet of about 30 aircraft, mostly Airbus jets. The airline has been discussing adding Airbus 330, the Airbus 350 and the Boeing 787 jets specifically for the trans-Atlantic and other long-haul flights. They intend to begin full operations in July.
RyanAir might be in for more American competition as well. Other low-cost carriers in America are looking into the possibility of crossing the Atlantic, including Southwest and JetBlue.
