Does your car insurance cover Channel crossings?

Many Britons who are frustrated with the hassles of local airports are choosing to hit the road and drive to their vacation destinations instead. Drivers who will be taking their cars across the Channel are being warned to check their car insurance policies, however, to ensure they have adequate coverage outside the country.

In a few weeks, thousands of Britons will drive to France to check out the Rugby World Cup. Among them are drivers whose car insurance policies won't cover them as they cross the English Channel. Drivers looking to get out of the rain and onto a sunny beach without having to go through an airport security line are in a similar situation.

NFU Mutual representative Laura Wood said: "As travel plans are finalised and the excitement builds for fans of all of the home nations, insurance can be the last thing on your mind. However, driving on unfamiliar foreign roads can be a tricky business. It is important that you check whether you are covered in the event of an accident or theft."

A recent study conducted by YouGov asked 2,100 people about their vacation plans this year and found that many will be driving to their holiday destinations in order to cut costs, help the environment and avoid the airport.

Extrapolated data suggests that some nine million Britons will hit the road on vacation this year, with a quarter of that number willing to drive for up to fifteen hours to get to their destination. As drivers head for the Rugby World Cup, or the beaches of Greece, they should make sure their car insurance policies are adequate so they can relax and enjoy the game.
