Some caravan drivers may need extra insurance

Families, retirees and anyone leaving the country this year with their caravan in tow would be well advised to have a second glance at their insurance policy before hitting the road.

According to one representative of the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), most car insurance policies providing out of country cover will cover driving with a caravan.

The BIBA spokesperson said: "Normally, when the caravan is hitched up to a private car the liability risk is covered as part of the motor insurance. So as long as the motor insurance has European cover, then that will be provided."

However, some car insurance policies are limited in their geographic scope and only provide insurance within this country. Drivers should take a closer look at their insurance policies to determine if extra coverage is required for their car and their caravan before going abroad.

Most insurance policies, which specifically cover caravans, generally extend the limits of their coverage throughout Europe. This kind of policy covers damage to both the caravan and its contents.

Recent studies suggest that many travellers are unaware about the exact nature of their insurance policies and many travel either without insurance or without bringing the details of their policy abroad with them.

Before hitting the road for a European adventure, take a moment to check your car insurance policy to be sure it covers you and your caravan in Europe.
