New flights scheduled between Canada and the UK

Fredericton Airport is looking to attract more tourists from the United Kingdom by offering new direct flights between the province of New Brunswick and England.

The new flights will operate from May to October next year and fly between Fredericton and Gatwick once a week. The Air Transat-operated flights will leave Canada every Tuesday and return from England on Wednesday. Management of the flights will be handled by the UK's largest tour operator, Canadian Affair. Prices for a round trip flight are expected to start at $400.

David Innes, the Airport authority's CEO, said they had been planning the move for three years. "I think the real economic benefit is getting people to come into New Brunswick but certainly the side benefit of this service is to have the U.K. more accessible for New Brunswickers," he said.

Travel agents in Fredericton are excited about the new flight. Janet Tomkins, an agent for Maritime Travel said that many people use London as a base for travel in Europe and will be taking advantage of the discounted flights.
In addition, many locals in Fredericton hope the flights will encourage tourists to visit their area. Anthony Knight of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce said: "We need to expand our capabilities and opportunities to attract new tourism dollars from outside the region and outside the U.S. as well. I mean, we rely heavily on the U.S. market and I think we need to diversify our tourism dollars, and this is a great way to do that."
