Delays for passengers after Heathrow crash

In order for rescue workers to carry out their job efficiently, over 200 flights were cancelled following the crash and many more delayed. Meanwhile more than 20 flights scheduled to arrive at the airport were diverted to neighbouring airports.

The backlog of flights following the event meant that travel delays at BAA operated Heathrow looked set to continue into Friday, and passengers were advised to contact their airline for further information.

Following the crash, Heathrow's southern runway was closed while teams of experts attended to the damaged aircraft. The runway was re-opened at 14:30 for departing aircraft.

"Heathrow is an airport which runs pretty much at full capacity all the time and so any incident is bound to have a significant effect," said a BAA spokesman.

British Airways was said to be the most affected airline operating from Heathrow, with 26 flights cancelled, while BMI reported having 14 flights cancelled.
