Drinking could void insurance claims

Many Britons consider a vacation abroad the perfect time to relax and let their hair down. What many don't know, however, is that excessive drinking while abroad, something which occurs fairly frequently according to a recent survey, has the potential to invalidate their travel insurance.

Recent research by moneysupermarket.com indicates that Britons on holiday spend an average of £4.5 billion on alcohol each year. On the 53 million international trips made by Britons every year, each adult spends on average £85 on alcohol.

While drinking often makes for a more relaxing vacation, excessive drinking can lead to accidents and injuries which are not covered under most travel insurance policies.

Only infrequently do insurance companies usually discover that an injury is caused by drunkenness, explained moneysupermarket.coms head of insurance research, Peter Gerrard. He warned, however, that in the event an insurance company is aware that the claimant's injuries were caused by alcohol, their insurance claim would be voided.

"It is a little known fact that travel insurance policies have a clause stating if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of an incident, your policy may be rendered invalid," he said.

Since most accidents and injuries when travelling are not caused by drinking, it is always a good idea to take out a travel insurance policy when heading abroad. In addition, the insurance covers you in case of loss, damage, theft or delay of your possessions while travelling.
