A new bus service linking the city of York with Leeds Bradford International Airport was launched outside York Minister on July 24th at 11:15. Present at the ceremony and riding the first bus in service were the Lord Mayor of York as well as several other prominent community members.
The Aircoach was launched at the end of February this year and has received enormous amounts of positive feedback from the 9,000 passengers who have already availed themselves of the service. The bus takes approximately 55 minutes to travel the 30 mile route between the city and the airport.
Representatives from the City of York Council, the Leeds Bradford International Airport, the York Tourism Bureau and Jet2.com joined Lord Mayor of York Councillor Irene Waudby at the opening.
First York's Managing Director Richard Eames said: The City of York is in the spotlight for both domestic and international travellers and the Aircoach service will continue to grow over the next few months as more people travel to and from York and Leeds Bradford International Airport. York was recently voted European Tourism City of the Year.
I would like to thank all those people who have worked hard to make this new service a success, both in First and also at our partner agencies, he concluded.
The feeling was echoed by the Director of City Strategy at City of York Council, Bill Woolley, who said: I am delighted that we have been able to work successfully with our partners to launch this service. The Council is committed to providing sustainable access for our residents to regional airports and improving links to the city for our international visitors.
Many companies were behind the new bus service, all with an interest in further promoting tourism to York. The first bus departs York Railway Station at 4:45. The second leaves at 6:00 and every hour thereafter until 21:00. From the airport, the first departure for York is at 7:40 and service continues every hour thereafter until 21:40 with two late night services.
