Age discrimination by insurers: is it fair?

A representative from the travel firm Milsom Howard recently argued that insurance companies are completely justified in their stratified pricing system. Generally those over 65, or people with certain medical conditions must pay more for travel insurance coverage than young or middle-aged travellers.

Although some have suggested that the age discrimination by insurance companies is unfair, particularly for those who have no pre-existing medical history, members of the insurance companies disagree. The increased premiums for these particular travellers are what helps keep the premiums lower for others who are at lower risk, insisted the representative from Milson Howard.

"It is not a charter for choosing a group of people and deciding to charge more for pure profit," he said. In addition, he said that the high level of competition in the industry keeps costs down for everyone using the service.

The Macmillan Cancer Support group recently released figures that showed that a large number of travellers who had received cancer treatments had difficulty getting insurance. Forty per cent of those looking for insurance were either completely refused by insurance companies or forced to pay higher costs than those who had never received cancer related treatments.
