Passport cards for U.S. citizens travelling by land or sea

The U.S. State Department will allow those travelling to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean to bypass the need for a passport and apply for passport cards beginning 1st February.

The wallet-sized cards will be priced at $45 for adults and $35 for children, prices that will be more affordable than passport prices. Adults already possessing a passport will only be charged $20 for a passport card.

U.S. citizens will have access to these cards by the spring, and they will be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean, but not for air travel.

The introduction of these cards represents part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which last year declared the need for U.S. citizens flying back from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean to present a passport. The sudden flood of passport applications led to a doubling of wait times, with travellers waiting up to 12 weeks to receive passports.
