Six more months of smoking at airport

Indianapolis International Airport is allowing smokers six months to ease into an airport-wide ban on smoking.

Passengers and employees have permission to smoke in certain parts of the upper passenger drop-off area, as well as an island area and covered area on the lower level. After June 30, a smoking ban will come into effect for the entire campus of the airport.

Airport spokeswoman Susan Williams said: "We wanted to give our passengers and employees some time to get used to the fact that the airport will eventually be all smoke-free."

The Indianapolis International Airport Board voted last week 6-1 that airport director Robert Duncan could approve designated smoking spots outside for a six-month period. Airport-property tenants can also seek approval from Duncan for designated outdoors smoking zones.

Although the ordinance will fine violations, no fines are currently being imposed. Duncan said "we plan to go more with passive enforcement the first year."
