A fine year for skiing; a high chance of accidents
Anyone planning a winter ski break this season would be wise to pack their travel insurance papers along with their skis as there are some scary situations out there on the slopes for those seeking thrills and fun.
Insurers say that one in seven people on ski vacations seek medical attention, a statistic so high, it really pays to hold coverage. This year, insurers are bracing themselves for a higher than usual number of claims as a good year for snow has been predicted. Good skiing conditions usually draw more people to the slopes, increasing the chances of an accident occurring or something being stolen.
Medical treatment on the slopes can be extremely expensive and will certainly exceed the basic coverage provided by the European Health Insurance card (EHIC). The average hospital evacuation will cost £1,500. Serious injuries require repatriation. From Europe, costs average around £4,000 and will be twice as high for repatriation from North America.
It really pays, not only to have insurance, but also to check the fine print and see what is covered. Some travel policies include winter sports while others do so on only a limited basis or not at all. The most inexpensive policies available often look good on paper but fail to stand up when the bearer is involved in a serious emergency.
