Will travel insurance help you this holiday season?

More Americans than ever are taking out single trip travel insurance policies while travelling abroad this year and the Better Business Bureau is offering some good tips on how to select the right policy for travels over the holiday period.

Last year in America, 67 million people bought travel insurance policies, an increase of 20 per cent since 2004, indicating the increasing popularity and usefulness of travel insurance policies.

First time buyers may have difficulty selecting the right policy, but the BBB says there are a few things you should look for when heading out from home.

The BBB suggests a travel insurance policy for any significant travel which may be ruined by bad weather or other problems.

Most policies will cover lost, stolen or delayed bags however some people already have this coverage under their homeowners insurance policy or through the airline. Trip cancellation/ Interruption (TCI) covers travellers in the event that they are unable to travel.

Most policies cover only cancellations or interruptions for weather, illness or death in the family and when buying a policy it's important to find out exactly what events qualify for reimbursement.

Some people already have emergency medical insurance under their regular medical insurance plan so check what coverage you have before paying for an expensive travel plan. Emergency medical evacuation coverage is always a good idea when travelling to remote and under-developed areas.

Those with pre-existing medical conditions are often not covered by medical travel insurance so it's important for travellers with medical conditions to ask lots of questions before purchasing a policy.

Suppliers Default insurance covers travellers who lose money when their travel supplier declares financial default but it does not cover losses incurred if the company goes out of business.

Cheap travel insurance providers are always happy to answer questions and usually provide a wide range of insurance options. Anyone booking travel this holiday season should take a few minutes to discuss their plans with an insurance advisor.
