Many travellers were stranded due to adverse weather conditions in and around New York City at the tail end of the Thanksgiving Day Weekend. Flights out of New York were delayed for hours due to rain and limited visibility.
Many feared that the heavy rains along the East Coast would spark a wave of delays during the heavy travel period, however overall there were few delays and the country enjoyed a weekend of relatively good weather.
At LaGuardia Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recorded average delays of three hours for most of Monday. At Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, flights were delayed for two hours while one hour delays at Kennedy International Airport were common.
LaGuardia Airport seemed the worst off, overall, with a total of 30 flights cancelled on Monday.
In contrast, the FAA reported delays of just 15 minutes or less at most other major airports including Los Angeles International Airport, Chicago Midway Airport and Washington Dulles Airport.
The FAA predicted that 38.7 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more during the Thanksgiving Holiday between Wednesday and Sunday. A spokesperson from Atlanta Airport predicted Sunday would be the busiest day for travel. Atlanta Airport was expecting 324,000 passengers on Sunday and 306,000 passengers on Monday.
Maria Burgos had the same idea and opted to travel home from New York to Miami on Monday instead of Sunday. Unfortunately for her, she got stuck in the bad weather in New York. "I thought this would be an easier travel day," she said.
