Silver Surfers hit the skies with good insurance

The world of backpacking and international travel is no longer a world monopolised by the young. Today, an ever increasing number of retired, pensioned and even elderly travellers are hopping on flights, setting sail on cruises and picking up their backpacks to see the world. Unfortunately, these silver surfers face one difficulty their younger counterparts do not share: an increased difficulty in locating good travel insurance.

Some older travellers are discouraged by the barrier their age poses in obtaining travel insurance while others are so concerned with finding the lowest priced options that they fail to ensure the coverage they buy is adequate.

It's a situation that has John Starr, a worker at Age Concern Bolton, a charity for the elderly, very concerned. We would naturally expect customers to shop around for their travel cover, but we urge them not to automatically plump for the cheapest option, he said.

It really does pay to shop around. Only a few companies today are still refusing insurance to seniors, but the policies offered vary enormously. Depending on the applicants age, health history and travel plans, prices will change. Some companies are able to offer both single and annual policies for seniors.

The important thing to consider is whether or not the policy will adequately cover your needs if the worst should happen while abroad. A few extra pounds spent now can save you a thousand later.
