Insurance questions: from pregnancy to gap year travel

Sorting out a quick and easy single trip travel insurance policy for a short break to Europe has never been easier in this day and age of internet bookings. For people with more complicated situations, however, it can sometimes be different to even find information about getting a good insurance policy. Here is some information on some tricky situations and how you can get insured if they apply to you.

There is often little medical reason why pregnant women can't travel but finding an insurance policy for them can be difficult. Women in advanced stages of pregnancy will discover that finding a policy is quite difficult since most only cover women until their 28th week of pregnancy. In addition, most airlines will only carry pregnant women up until that time as well, unless they carry a doctor's certificate with them.

Vacationers in the Caribbean often wonder if their insurance covers them in the event of a hurricane. Most policies will cover for injuries sustained in such an event as well as any possessions damaged, but little more. The best idea is to stay in a hotel with a 'hurricane guarantee' although you should investigate what the guarantee entails, it could be anything from a refund to a voucher for a replacement holiday.

Travellers over the age of 75 will almost certainly need specialised insurance but the good news is that it is easy to get these days. A number of companies offer policies designed for older travelers and annual insurance is also available.

Those who are out of their home country for long periods of time may want to consider taking out an expatriate health care policy. Gap year travellers who forget to renew their insurance or expatriates based abroad can get a good range of health options from companies with expatriate health insurance.
