Pets also need Travel Insurance

People take out insurance against illness while travelling and against theft of their valuables, but many people are still unaware the insurance is available and highly advisable for pets. Pet insurance can help cover the costs of expensive veterinary bills and save families and their animals a lot of money and heartache.

A spokesperson for the Pet Care Trust, Alexandra Baker said that pet insurance can help cover medical treatment required by family animals.

"It is the same with a lot of things you care about in life, she said. It is important that your pet is covered from a young age ... It helps to prevent heartache later on when you are presented with big [vet's] bills."

Ms. Baker pointed out that a number of pet insurance policies are available and that like other kinds of insurance, the policies and what they will cover, vary widely. For that reason, she advises that families research their options before making a decision, in order to make sure their pets have adequate coverage.

Like medical insurance for humans, the earlier in a pet's life that the policy is purchased, the lower the insurance premiums tend to be.

Travel insurance is also available for pets that take vacations alongside their owners. Pets don't have to be flying to be travelling; many dogs, for example, join the family on a car trip to the Continent. Should anything happen to your pet while you are travelling, a good travel insurance policy for your pet can certainly help.
