JLA awarded UK Airport of the Year

For the first time ever, Liverpool John Lennon Airport was recognised in the annual Travel Trade Gazette (TTG) awards as the UK Airport of the Year.

The awards ceremony was held at the Old Billingsgate in London and was attended by over 1,300 guests. The awards, which recognise achievement over the year in the travel industry, was hosted by Rob Brydon, a well known television comedian.

Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, London Luton and Bristol Airports were also short listed for the award. After a rigorous judging procedure, it was JLA that shone, however.

Short listed airports were voted for by readers of TTG, the travel trade publication with the highest circulation in the UK. Travel agents and those in the industry voted on their favourite airport. Six finalist from those votes faced a panel of 37 industry experts who decided the final winner.

The experts, who came from organisations like the Federation of Tour Operators, Global Travel Group and ABTA, based their assessment on personal experience as well as factors like the airline's work in the local community, their environmental initiatives, and improvements in public transportation to the airport. Factors such as the airline's growth in passenger and airline numbers were also considered.

JLAs managing director, Neil Pakay said: "To win the industry's most prestigious airport award is a recognition of both Peel's belief in turning the airport into a real regional gateway and to the employees and businesses who work here to turn the investment into a real experience.

"This gives us confidence to keep pressing ahead and be at the forefront of the North West's regeneration programme.
