Jammu's divisional commissioner Sudhanshu Pandey recently announced that the citys regional airport would soon be undergoing development in order to become an international airport.
"Under the upgradation plans, the runway would be extended by another 1,300 feet towards the direction of Tawi,'' Mr Pandey said.
The announcement was made on Tuesday at a meeting between representatives from the Airport Authority of India (AII), the Air Force, army and civil administration.
In order for the development to occur, the AII will have to take possession of additional land currently under the ownership of the army and civilians. Part of this land would be used for the creation of additional parking spaces at the airport.
"This would be done by extending the existing one and constructing a new parking lot in the vicinity,'' Mr Pandey explained.
Other development plans include a new security gate in front of the airport and enlarging the parking bays to make them capable of accommodating more aircrafts.
