The top aviation trade group International Air Travel Association (IATA) claims its safety audit will encourage the European Union to lift its travel ban against Indonesian carriers flying to Europe.
Currently, there are no Indonesian airlines registered with the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), although Garuda Indonesia is in the process of obtaining the audit.
The IOSA is widely viewed as having the most stringent safety requirements of all aviation audits and it expires after two years. Besides passing the audit, members must also pay a $30,000 fee.
Giovanni Bisignani, director general of IATA, said the good reputation of an IOSA will serve Garuda Indonesia well in its negotiations with the EU.
"If the Indonesian government is serious about safety, the IOSA should become mandatory for all Indonesian carriers," he said.
Bisignani added that IATA assistance to Russia saved the country from an accident rate that had previously been 12 times the global average. There are now 240 active IATA members worldwide, 150 of which are officially registered with an IOSA. Future members will be required to pass an IOSA, although non-members are welcome to do so as well.
