Good year for growth for HIAL

Numbers released on Monday, October 15th from the Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, (HIAL), the company operating many of the airports in Scotland, indicate that 2007 was a good year for growth in airports located in the north and west. Passenger traffic in these areas rose by five per cent this year.

HIAL manages ten airports across Scotland, which accommodated 698,000 passengers from April to the end of September 2007. The number indicates a 34,000 person increase over figures from the same period last year.

Inglis Lyon, managing director of HIAL said: Based on this year's performance to date, we should handle approaching 1.3 million passengers by the end of March 2008. That would make this operating year our seventh consecutive year of growth and our busiest ever since HIAL was formed in 1986.

Although aircraft movements stayed fairly stable compared with last year, Mr. Lyon suggested there was a growing demand for new routes and access to international destinations and therefore more room for the Scottish airports to grow in the future.

Already increased air connectivity has had a positive influence on the region, according to Mr. Lyon. The variety of flights available, continue to catalyse economic growth and are helping to make our region a more attractive place in which to live and invest, he said.
