Gap year youth not taking out insurance

Experts working with gap year students say that travel insurance is often misunderstood by today's travelling youth.

The founder of gapyear.com, Tom Griffiths, has observed that travel insurance seems to be a low priority for most of the 18 to 24-year olds he sees planning long vacations in their year off before college.

In fact, his company conducted research which found that most young adults spend more time considering the purchase of their pen knife than they do considering the benefits of a travel insurance policy.

"A lot of the young travellers don't actually know what it is or what it does, said Mr. Griffith about the perception many young people have about travel insurance. They see it more as an obligation as opposed to actually understanding that it's useful for emergencies," he concluded.

Prevalent in many young adults, according to Mr. Griffith, is the attitude of almost invincibility. Many people do not take out insurance because they believe that accidents won't happen to me. In fact, insurance claims are filed on a daily basis by travellers for everything from illness, to accidents like falling off the kerb side while on vacation.

According to the head of insurance research for moneysupermarket.com, Peter Gerrard, and according to many other experts in the field, travel insurance is nothing short of essential for everyone leaving the country, but especially so for gap year travellers and others who plan to be away from home for an extended period of time.
