On July 18th, officials at the East Midlands Airport opened a new multi-faith prayer room. The room is designed to be accessible to anyone who wishes a moment of quiet contemplation before their flight.
At the opening ceremony, several community leaders contributed stones to a ceremonial cairn. The Mayor of Melton Bowbray placed a stone on the pile, as a sign of prayer and remembrance. Other contributors to the cairn included representatives from Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
Reverent Roy Monks led a short service to open the new facility with the help of members of the airport chaplaincy team. The Chaplain has an office in the new prayer room.
Now that the facility is open, it will not close. Travellers can pray, worship or enjoy a moment of refection in the space at any hour of the day, seven days a week, any day of the year. The space has facilities for washing and can accommodate many religious practices. There is even a private space for those seeking personal reflection.
Following several years of hard work and dedication it is fantastic to have a purpose built prayer room with facilities for all, said Reverent Monks. The new room is a wonderful place for quiet contemplation and a great satisfaction to have provided a calming place for worship for passengers, local businesses and employees on site. The new prayer room is a great place for anyone who wants to drop in for some quiet time; it's a real sanctuary of peace.
