China's tickets go paper-free

Electronic tickets are fast becoming a reality for those travelling from China or with Chinese carriers. Five domestic airlines in China recently began working with Galileo International on technology that will enable them to issue travellers with e-tickets.

China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Shandong Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Xiamen Airlines all hope to be operating without paper tickets by the end of the year.

Galileo operates an international system of distribution for electronic tickets. To date the programme has generated over 27 million electronic tickets, perhaps as much as 75 per cent of all air tickets issued. It is estimated that the use of e-tickets has saved enough paper to keep 5.7 hectares of forest a month still standing.

In addition, it is estimated that using electronic tickets has allowed airlines to save as much as five per cent of the fare of each ticket.

The China Air Transport Association eliminated paper tickets in October 2006, prompting domestic airlines to seek electronic alternatives. The country is aiming to become the first nation to operate its ticketing system entirely paper-free by the end of the year.
