Rail service enjoys renewed popularity

UK rail travel is growing at a faster rate than air travel, reflecting the waning desire for leisure travel in the face of declining consumer expenditure growth.

A Civil Aviation Authority report released Friday said the air travel growth rate over the past two years has dropped to 2% after generally remaining between 5% and 9% for decades.

Improved rail services have stepped in where domestic air travel is declining. Price hikes due to rising oil prices and increased air passenger duty have combined with increased security delays to make domestic air travel a less attractive option.

The growth rate of UK air travel in 2006 fell behind that of 14 other EU markets, though the UK market continues to be one of the largest.

Yet business travel and travel abroad to visit relatives and friends continue to grow at a steady pace. This trend demonstrates the increasing labour mobility within the European Union.

The CAA report claims that environmental awareness did not play a role in declining growth. The report states that passengers' environmental concerns "do not seem to be having a significant effect" on demand for air travel.
