C02 emissions at Bristol rival an entire nation

An anti-poverty group recently pointed out that the entire African nation of Malawi produces the same amount of C02 emissions each year as do the flights at Bristol International Airport.

The World Development Movement is joining climate change activists who believe that the aviation industry, particularly in the UK, is damaging the environment and contributing the changes in the world's climate.

However, a spokesperson from the airport claims that: "Passenger numbers are up, but aircraft numbers have gone down. The industry is forecast to grow, but also to become greener and cleaner."

Bristol International Airport has plans to expand over the next decade and hopes to attract six million passengers over the course of this year. By 2015, their target number is nine million.

To accommodate these additional flyers, the airport would like to expand the existing terminal building to twice its current size, build enough parking spaces to accommodate 5,000 cars and see a total of 17 flights every hour.

In contrast, the World Development Movement is calling for cutbacks. By 2050, they would like to see an 80 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.
