Officials at Birmingham Airport were pleasantly surprised when the Airports Council International (ACI) handed out their yearly awards, recognising outstanding service in the industry. The distinction of being the Best Airport in Europe went to the Midlands airport.
The awards went out to several categories and Birmingham excelled in the five to ten million passenger range. Judges for the ACI were particularly impressed with the airport's involvement in the local community and work with the local environment.
But that was just the icing on the cake. The meat of the award went to the airport's customer service, security, facilities, operations and retail services.
Acting managing director for Birmingham Airport, Joe Kelly was very proud of the award. "To have won this accolade by ACI Europe is a fantastic achievement as it recognises the investments that we have made to position Birmingham Airport at the same level as leading European airports, he said.
"The success of the airport is built on the hundred plus companies which operate on site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The hard work and dedication of all our partners has enabled Birmingham Airport to win this award."
Last year Birmingham Airport saw nine million passengers pass through its doors.
