BAA airports take off in September

Figures recently released from Britain's largest airport operator, BAA show that more and more Britons are taking to the skies, with passenger numbers in seven airports in the UK increasing this September over figures from the same period last year.

In September this year, the seven airports operated by BAA saw a total of 14 million passengers come through their doors. This number indicates a growth rate of 2.9 per cent over passenger numbers in September 2006.

The fastest growth among BAA's holdings, was in Aberdeen which jumped by 10.5 per cent this year and in Edinburgh which increased by 6.5 per cent. Gatwick's growth was more moderate, with 3.9 per cent more passengers in September this year. Growth at Heathrow was at 2.1 per cent, Stansted saw a increase of 2.5 per cent this year and Southamptons passenger numbers also grew by 2.6 per cent.

The airport saw a 5.6 per cent increase in long-haul flights this year. Other markets which performed well this year were scheduled flights to Europe and North America which increased by 5.1 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively.
