BAA imposes extra baggage cost

BAA have announced that passengers could be charged £240 if they wish to check in extra baggage on a return long-haul flight.

Travellers on shorter international flights can expect to be charged £120 for checking in extra baggage and those on domestic flights £60.

Currently, passengers are allowed to check in more than one item of luggage on the condition that neither exceeds the limit of 32kg (which will be reduced to 23kg as of 30th September 2007).

However, the new extra baggage rates will come into place as of next Tuesday, 13th February 2007.

The new rules will mean that travellers will be unable to check-in more than one item of luggage without facing the new tariffs. So, even if the combined weight of two items of luggage are below the 32kg limit, travellers will be charged for the extra baggage.

A statement on BAA's website, states that the airline is aiming for "a single allowance system based on the number of bags that can be checked in" which will make things simpler.

Analysts suggest that this system will enable the airline operator to make a smooth financial transition to Heathrow Terminal 5 in 2008.

On the other hand, passengers will have the option to pay in advance online which will discount the fee by 30%. This will mean the price per extra baggage checked in on long distance return flights will cost £168, short haul returns £84 and domestic flights £42.
