Recent research indicates that a large number of those travellers packing skis on their winter vacation this year are doing so without enough insurance to really protect them in the event of an accident on the slopes.
Moneysupermarket.com carried out research which found that 28 per cent of snowboarders and skiers take off on winter vacations without first ensuring they are adequately insured.
Of those surveyed, 23 per cent said that they couldn't remember if they had arranged travel insurance for the vacation or not.
The study found some differences between men and women when it came to buying insurance. Some 31 per cent of the men surveyed didn't bother with insurance at all. Only 24 per cent of women neglected to consider insurance.
Moneysupermarket.com's Peter Gerrard said: "The millions of people who do ski and snowboard cannot afford to skimp on their travel insurance. While some people may not realise they need extra cover for winter sports, it seems many are prepared to take a huge financial risk, both to themselves and potentially to other skiers."
Fortunately, many people heading to ski resorts on winter holidays don't even pack their skis or snowboards. The research revealed that 22 per cent of winter vacation travellers go to the resort for the ambience alone and never set foot on the slopes.
Travel Insurance can still offer valuable protection, even in such cases, against theft of belongings, lost or delayed luggage and for delayed or cancelled flights. For those who will take to the slopes, travel insurance is vital in protecting expensive ski equipment and in offering medical insurance in the case of an injury on the slopes.
